Item Description... Overview Describes the author's experiences as the son of one of the founders of Hamas, how he assisted his father in an important role in the organization, and how he came to renounce violence and Hamas and become a Christian.
Publishers Description Since he was a small boy, Mosab Hassan Yousef has had an inside view of the deadly terrorist group Hamas. The oldest son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a founding member of Hamas and its most popular leader, young Mosab assisted his father for years in his political activities while being groomed to assume his legacy, politics, status . . . and power. But everything changed when Mosab turned away from terror and violence, and embraced instead the teachings of another famous Middle East leader. In "Son of Hamas," Mosab Yousef--now called "Joseph"--reveals new information about the world's most dangerous terrorist organization and unveils the truth about his own role, his agonizing separation from family and homeland, the dangerous decision to make his newfound faith public, and his belief that the Christian mandate to "love your enemies" is the only way to peace in the Middle East.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Jun 11, 2010 |
I didn't know what to think about this book when I picked it up. The conflict between Palestine and Israel is so partisan, I am wary of the omnipresent bias permeating all discussions. I have strong opinions on this subject and I could potentially be delving into a book that will stab at these opinions. What I found was a truly enlightening book that shows the struggle of a man deeply entrenched in the conflict rise above bias through Christian principle. While this book is by no means a concentration on Christian conversion, it does include this element. And, it is amazing to see what love can do (and did) in arguably the most pressurized conflict in the world.
The book begins with Mosab's childhood struggles with a frequently imprisoned father who serves as an imam for his area. Despite avoiding involvement in military or terror activities, he leads the people and thus becomes a target for Israeli interrogation. The book at this point shows a Mosab who has a very pointed and negative view of Israel. There is good (his father and Islam) and there is evil (Israel). One thing that is interesting is to watch the dramatic change in Mosab's view of the world. Initially, this change occurs while Mosab attempts to remain a devout Muslim. One of the most defining moments occurs when he purchases a few guns (which don't work) and he is imprisoned for his actions. This is where Mosab begins to understand the suffering his father has gone through, and he sees the inherent problems between his faith and the many governing/militant Palestinian groups. Mosab eventually works with the Israelis which goes against every fiber of his being. The struggles he goes through are fascinating, as are his religious struggles as he begins to realize the love within Christianity. Mosab has truly found the only means of peace, which is to follow Jesus' teaching to love one another. Only then can there be peace in the Middle East.
Ron Brackin's help is obvious as the book flows as if it is a story being told from a native English-speaker. Sometimes I wonder how much of the thought is Mosab's and how much is Brackin's. However, the writing never over-dramatizes situations. In fact, some of the most poignant moments of the book seem to pass by with very matter-of-fact story telling. In short, the language barrier does not get in the way of the story.
One thing I found most intriguing was the look into events I had heard about in the news over the past couple of decades. Seeing an insider perspective of Israeli and Palestinian maneuvers to bring about their own objectives was especially interesting. For instance, I vividly remember the Israeli tanks surrounding Arafat's compound and thinking this was a watershed event in this region's politics. Mosab reports details of this and other events that were not reported in the media. He is fair in showing both Israeli faults and Palestinian faults. This was what was so amazing to me. Mosab gets that both groups are at fault and he sees things much more objectively than almost anyone else I have read on this topic.
There are many reasons to read this book. The history. The political perspective. The insight into life of Palestinian communities and politics. And, of course, seeing struggles with religion culminating in peace within at least one person through Jesus Christ. While you might not find all of these reasons viable for reading, I highly encourage all to read this book to understand the conflict better.

| A great read. The overview of the history of the area and Islam in that region over the past 100 yrs as well as the insight into the inner workings of Palestinian leadership in recent years was very informative. In addition, his personal story and thought process as he grew up in this environment is something you'll never get from the 6pm news or any weekly news magazine. | | | | Absolutely Eye-Opening Jun 3, 2010 |
| This book is fantastic in every aspect and absolutely steeped in painful truth. A MUST-READ. | | | | Amazing story. I actually want to meet him and his father. Jun 3, 2010 |
I was surprised by my own feelings at the end of this book. I felt such sorrow for his father. It is such irony. This is the story about a father who taught his son all that is good in himself and humanity. And the result of all those blessed fatherly teachings was that the son grew up to be a man that acted on those lessons to find that loving your enemy was the only solution to the worlds problems. The reason I felt sorrow for the father is that the father felt he had failed, not realizing the glorious success he had in his son. Amazing. I just want to look his father in the eye and say "You did great dad. Your son acted on your convictions and has shown the world the truth." God bless Mosab, his family and father. Yes, the father is one of the founders of Hamas, a terrorist organization. But he is also the father of a man who rejected the hatred and stood up for what is right. Based at least partly on what his father taught him growing up.
FANTASTIC BOOK. I really enjoyed it....
And now for the follow up.... the USA is trying to deport the man. The man who rejected the hate, acted out of love and saved countless lives.. he's given a tourist visa by our crack department of homeland security without batting and eye, and then when the man goes to ask for political asylum, they run around like a bunch of chicken littles "The terrorist is here! The terrorist is here!" and are trying to deport him. ([...])
More irony. But frankly I'm growing tired of living in a country run by morons.

I have read this book multiple times. I have given away multiple copies. Everyone who reads these copies tells me how hard it is to get the books back from those they lent them. Could not put it down. Very convincing. When you suffer with him as he is abused by the Israeli military, you feel his desire for revenge. When he helps you see the much worse cruelty and hypocrisy of the Hamas community in which he operates, you start to question, along with him, his previous never-changing beliefs. As he saves lives and prevents the bloodshed of innocents, time and time again, you feel his gentle nature. The book continues on from there, but I will let you experience it. | | | Write your own review about Bktrax-Disc-Son Of Hamas (6 CD)
