Reviews - What do our customers think?
Stay Away  Apr 18, 2010
This is the first book (well, partial book) I have read of Mrs. Brunstetter and I likely will not read another by this author. I did what I have NEVER done in more than 50 years...I quit reading the book after 14 chapters. Unfortunantly for me, I bought all 3 in this series but I'm not going to waste my time reading them. There was nothing that caused me to like or pity any of these characters. Nothing draws you into the sitting or experiences that the characters are going through. It's as if you are driven to a complete strangers house (blindfolded) and threw into the middle of tradgedy and chaos and you are expected to be concerned or feel pity for complete strangers! You have to try too hard to feel compassion for any of these characters. No time was given in this book to develope who the characters were nor was any description given/developed for the setting where this takes place. This book just (at least the part I read) seemed like a bunch of sentences, of what the characters spoke to each other, were strung together. I kept looking for something, anything to like about the chaaracters but there wasn't anything given.

Joy Of Reading  Feb 20, 2010
This book was a fast read. there were many heart felt situraration,One of my Favorite parts in this book,Wayne Mom did'nt care for Lorrain,She continued to go over to Waynes home to help out No matter how Waynes mom treated her She came to relize that Lorrain cared about the whole family not just trying to get back with Wayne. I highlt recommend this book. If you enjoy reading amish books.

A Cousin's Promise  Feb 16, 2010
2nd book in the new series. A little slower than the first book in the beginning pages. However, the plot thickens, as they say, as the book progresses. A very worthwhile read. The third book should be out in March.

Suzie Housley, Midwest Book Review  Feb 3, 2010
A group of young Amish couples decided to make the journey to Hershey, Pennsylvania to spend a fun filled Labor Day weekend at Hershey Park. What should have been a memorable holiday turned into a day of tragedy in the blink of an eye.

When the driver's attention was diverted, the groups van collided with a tractor trailer. Three of the occupants were killed and two were seriously injured. Everyone who was involved in the accident on that horrific day knew their lives would be forever changed.

Loraine Miller and Wayne Lambright were happily engaged. They were two of the passengers that were riding in the van that crashed. Loraine escaped the wreckage with minor cuts and bruises. Wayne was not as lucky; his injuries required one of his legs to be amputated.

When Wayne wakes up and learns the extent of his injury, he pushes Loraine away. He refuses to have her tied to "half" of a man who cannot support her. He makes the decision to end their engagement and encourages her to find someone else.

Loraine is heartbroken and refuses to believe Wayne is ending their relationship. She is determined to stand by his side and show him that she will accept him unconditionally. Wayne constantly rejects Loraine, every time she tries to get close to him, he pushes her further away.

Two years ago, Jack Beechy moved to Montana to make a new way of life for himself by exploring the English world. He left behind his Amish family and the girl he was dating, Loraine Miller. When he learns that Loraine and her friends were involved in an accident he is compelled to learn of their welfare, he makes the decision to return to his homeland.

Jake immediately seeks out Lorraine and is relieved to learn that she escaped with minor injuries. His heart goes out to the other occupants who were not so lucky. When he learns that Wayne broke off his engagement with Lorraine he sees it as an opportunity to reclaim her heart.

Will Lorraine remain too loyal to Wayne despite his constant rejection? Or will the feelings she once felt for Jake be rekindled?

Hallmark Movie Channel take note Wanda E. Brunstetter's Indiana Cousins series would make an excellent choice for your next prime time movie. This book was magnificent! The characters touched my heart and by being so lifelike I felt their pain as they experienced it. I predict this series will be one that will receive high awards.

Amish on Vay-cay with friends or Amish on Spring Break? Not likely....  Jan 25, 2010
Where should I begin to describe A Cousin's Promise, by Wanda Brunstetter? She claims to have visited Amish Country frequently, and know the ways of the people that live there. She needs to do a bit more homework. And here are some of the reasons why.

This book is not based on fact. It is based on the author's imagination. Unless she is describing the most contemporary Amish community on the planet, her version of an Amish community does no exist in this life.

In the story, some Amish cousins and friends (the cousins can travel in a car if they are not driving, some Amish drive cars, but many do not) are off to a vacation one day off at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania for a break from their routines. On the way, they have a horrific accident. Loraine Miller and Wayne Lambright are engaged to be married. Some Amish families arrange the marriages of their children, but it does not appear to be the case in this story. Wayne is injured in the wreck, and has a plan to make Loraine leave him for her old high school beau.

Her old beau is Jake Beechy, who is off discovering the world and making money at his new job. Jake hears of the crash and returns home to Loraine.

There is some heated drama with Wayne's mother and Loraine, since his mother does not want them to marry. This is curious, because the Amish are the most welcoming people anyone will every meet anywhere. That much is true. But the future mother-in-law acts like a spoiled jealous ex-girlfriend, instead of a mother to Wayne. I can't believe that an Amish woman would act this way to a future daughter-in-law, it is just not in their nature to behave so rudely to someone else.

It is unusual that the Amish will go to a sit down dinner in a restaurant. This is not to say that they can't go, it is just that they usually do not do this. Of course, the Amish are permitted to work outside of the areas where they live, and many do. But they have strict rules in dealing and living so near to the "outside world," that they keep their beliefs pure as a result of it.

The book was not realistic to me. Maybe it is a great piece of fiction in its depiction of how two people come to terms with an injury suffered as a result of a car accident. And it tells how the couple and the community come together to support each other after a loss like this one has occurred. But as far as being a book written about the Amish community - I do not buy it. Not one bit. I guess I have to chalk this one up to creative license for the author, there is no other excuse for getting it so factually wrong.
