Publishers Description 1999 Gold Medallion Award winner A repackage of Francine Rivers's beloved novel, now with a stunning new look and bonus discussion questions. All that matters for Cadi Forbes is finding the one man who can set her free from the sin that plagues her, the sin that has stolen her mother's love from her and made her wish she could flee life and its terrible injustice. But Cadi doesn't know that the "sin eater" is seeking as well. Before their journeys are over, Cadi and the sin eater must face themselves, each other, and the One who will demand everything from them in exchange for the answers they seek. A captivating tale of suffering, seeking, and redemption.

 | Truth Is Stronger Than Fiction Mar 25, 2007 |
| "Sin Eater" has the usual problems of fiction --- unbelievability and half-truths that manipulate the reader. Most troubling is readers who believe the story is based on a true history of Appalachia! Historical novels typically credit museums, archives or historical documents. My copy of Miss Rivers' novel lists NO such sources. (Can you tell I doubt the novel's basis in history?) Time would be better spent reading true stories of Christian conversion. Hopefully, Miss Rivers will someday use her degree in Journalism to that end. In the meantime, if you must read this book, scrub your mind afterward by reading John Ch.6 every day for a week. | | | | Unusual Title, Engrossing Book Mar 18, 2007 |
| When the movie came out at our local theaters, I thought it would be some harum scarum thing that wouldn't interest me. I looked it up on the internet and was pleasantly surprised to find it a story of redemption and faith. I had never heard of the title, much less Francine Rivers. I went to see it that very day and was awed by the performances, the lush setting, and the amazing story. I intend on buying it when it comes out in April. Because I was so taken with the story and its many plot twists, I also purchased the book and loved it. It made me remember how much fun reading was when I was a child transported to different places by the magic of the author. This is a must read. It will be a book you will be sorely tempted to lend to friends, but will grieve if they don't give it back. I'm looking forward to reading some more of her books. Incidentally, I generally avoid "romance" authors like the plague. This author although tagged romance, seems much more mainstream to me. She isn't a fluff writer. | | | | Brought me to their world Feb 25, 2007 |
| I read this is 2003, and have recommended it to many friends since. I just love the plot, the imagination in it, and also the way they spoke and the cadence of the story. I have such strong ideas in my mind of who Cadi and Fagan and Cullen and all the characters are now, that I almost don't want to see the movie, because I am afraid it will change the way I think of the characters and story now, and I don't want that to be lost in any way. This is a great mystery, and great romance all in one, and I recommend reading the book before you see the new movie. | | | | A wonderful, touching story Feb 22, 2007 |
Very rarely does a book bring tears to my eyes; "The Last Sin-Eater" is one such story. Rivers brings her characters to life with such poignancy and insight that they seem like true flesh-and-blood people. It feels like these were real people that the author actually knew. The dialogue, especially the Old Country accents and bits of dialect, is superb. The author gives each character his or her own voice, and resists the temptation to give her young heroine words that sound too mature for her years.
As dramatic as the story is, Rivers keeps it free of saccharine and melodrama. The weight of guilt that burdens young Cadi, Bletsung McLeod's refusal to abandon a love that is both hopeful and hopeless, and the devastating mix of sorrow and blame that have turned Cadi's mother into a hollow shell seem very real. The climactic scenes are handled well, especially the heart-rending scene when the Sin Eater is confronted with the futility of his efforts.
I do have a few quibbles with the story. First, although the dialogue is generally excellent, the Man of God who comes into the valley communicates almost entirely by quoting Scripture, which I didn't think was natural. Cadi and Fagan also seem to become Bible-quoting machines after their conversions. I suppose it's possible that the Holy Spirit could miraculously bring back to their minds passages that they had learned from the Man of God, but it strains the believability of the story a bit. Still, it's refreshing to read a Christian novel that uses God's Word as something more than a tacked-on moral.
The only other complaint I would lodge involves the character Lilybet. Although she provides some interesting dramatic elements (when some of the folks think Cadi is talking to a ghost or an imaginary friend), I think the story would have been better without her. It doesn't seem likely that God would send a (possibly angelic) messenger when He could accomplish the same thing through other means of guidance.
These minor flaws aside, "The Last Sin Eater" is a unique and wonderful story that captures the feel of an isolated mountain community in the 1850's - a community haunted by dark secrets. It's also a powerful reminder of why we need a Savior. Jesus came to "save His people from their sins", not to give everybody an easy, happy life. In fact, lending this book to unbelieving friends could be a great way to bring up the topics of sin & salvation.
If you enjoyed "Christy" (either the book or the TV show) you'll probably love this book, too. Five stars for "The Last Sin Eater"! | | | | Not her best, but still a valuable and enjoyable read! Feb 3, 2007 |
This book starts out kinda slow and is a little difficult to get into due to the accent and lingo of the characters'. However, I highly recommend pushing through the beginning. It's worth it! Francine Rivers does a really nice job developing her characters throughout the book. They have such depth and personality that you grieve with them, pity them, fear for them, and rejoice with them.
The Last Sin Eater is a novel about a girl named Cadi who for many different reasons is intrigued by the sin eater, a mysterious and isolated man who supposedly eats the sin of the dead. What starts as a journey and adventure for Cadi winds up being an adventure for Fagan, the sin eater, Elda, and eventually the whole town as the Truth is revealed from the man of God!
The overwhelming theme of this book is the search for release from guilt and fear. For those of us who sometimes take for granted our freedom from death through the intercession of Jesus Christ, this book really makes you think about both the total depravity and helplessness of man and the incomprehensible mercy and love of Jesus, the one true "sin eater."
Unlike a lot of Francine Rivers's other books, this one does not really have a love story. In a way, it almost has a feel like The Giver or Fahrenheit 451 - a society built on secrets, where questions are unwelcome but the truth will always rise to the surface. However, it is a book filled with hope in the form of freedom from oppression, fear, and guilt. One major plus is that the book contains a very clear gospel presentation throughout. I probaby would have given it a 3.5 if that option were available but the clear gospel message got me to bump it to a 4.
I definitely recommend reading this book once in your lifetime. It is also safe for all ages. :)
SIDE NOTE: I went to see a pre-screening of the movie last night. I don't recommend it. I knew they would have to cut out and change a lot to fit it into the time frame of a movie, but I thought it would at least clearly present the gospel. So many parts of the book were removed or placed in the wrong order that it not only affected the character development and enjoyability of the movie, but it also muddled up the Truth. I do not recommend bringing non-believers to see this movie with you unless you are willing to spend the time after the movie explaining the real truth to them.
Salvation is not earned through confessing your sins and telling the truth. It's not earned at all. It is a free gift from God paid for by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. All that is required for salvation is trust in Christ alone to save. Discipleship is an entirely different story, but salvation comes from trusting in what Christ has already accomplished!
I'm sure that is what the creator of the movie meant, but so much of it was left to be implied that the message was left completely unclear. I wish it didn't end up being a guessing game when the book is so clear on this. Oh well. Not many movies are better than their books anyway! So enjoy the book! | | | Write your own review about Last Sin Eater (Repack)
