When I first read this book, I thought, "This is a just a rehash of the material in Manning's other books." Several months later I picked it up again and was stunned (smacked in the face) by the voice of God speaking to me through its words.

Brennan Manning's The Furious Longing of God does an excellent job of bringing to light the fact that God wants to be with us. Depending on where you are spiritually, this book can be just what you need. Coming from a very intellectual perspective myself religiously, I enjoy how Manning writes to the heart. His prose forges a vein that lifts my spirit and explains God's love to me in a way that I can feel and know of its depth. Too many only KNOW of God's love. I'm not sure they actually experience it. A recovering alcoholic, Manning has done just that and thus is able to explain it in a passionate way; in a way that only a truly forgiven person can.
Manning spoke to me on several occasions. "We may scrupulously observe the Ten Commandments and rarely miss church on a Sunday morning, but a love affair with Jesus is just not our cup of tea." This explains so many in the religious world today, including myself at one time . . . I hope. I want to know Jesus intellectually but I also want to know him in a deeper fashion. In a way that is personal. "For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, `Abba! Father!'" (Romans 8:15) Abba is a very personal noun for God that we can all use and should be comfortable in using. God wants us to.
Manning's larger purpose is to show that we are not worthy of Christ but that He wants us and therefore we can throw off the burdens of guilt and pious suppression that we forge for ourselves. We don't have to be perfect and we don't have to be someone we're not. Obedience is key however and through that obedience we can come to know the Christ of the Gospels in a way that we never thought possible. Manning says, "Too many of us have received knowledge without appreciation and facts without enthusiasm." I don't want this. I want to be excited about God's love not just because I know about it but because I've experienced it.
Manning also doesn't put you in a cycle of good today and going to Hell tomorrow which is what turns many off when it comes to Christianity. For Christians who need to be reminded of God's deep love for us, or for everyone else who needs to understand the kind of love God has for each person, it serves both purposes well. It presents the self as someone who tries to make things work in their life, but doesn't quite measure up even in their own eyes. We all need love in the deepest way. We need to be loved to love, and we are- by God Himself.
