Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | Wonderfully Encouraging and Educational Aug 20, 2007 |
My children and I enjoy this book. I appreciate the author's attention to the Bible, and his understanding that the evolutionary theory is just a theory -- not a fact! Mr. Ham, Please keep on writing and publishing books that build faith and encourage critical thinking. Romans 8:7 | | | | Creationist gem May 6, 2007 |
| If you're a creationist, then you know how hard it is to find books like these. My husband found it a little too flippant, but our daughter enjoys it. I think it's cute and well done. | | | | D is for Delusional Aug 19, 2006 |
Kenneth Alfred Ham knows everything about dinosaurs. Absolutely amazing things about dinosaurs. Things that no other living man or woman knows. And he wants to share all of it with you. His very special gift to children everywhere is the book "D is for Dinosaur."
Here are some other letters you need to keep in mind before purchasing this flight of fancy or reading it to your children:
A is for Absurdities and more than a few. B is for Beliefs that are cruelly abused. C is for Charlatans that prey on the young. D is for Delusions from which you should run. E is for Evidence which must be supplied. F is for facts quickly denied. G is for Glaring mistakes and omissions. H is for simply Hysterical omissions. I is for Intellect left behind. J is for Juvenile when in a factual bind. K is for Knowledge never used. L is for Legitimacy so sadly abused. M is for Manic hand waving and tantrums. N is for Never happened as stated here. P is for Pandering to prejudice and fear. Q is for Queries the author doesn't want to hear. R is for Reality left unrepresented. S is for Science silenced and undefended. T is for Truth for which you must look elsewhere. U is for Unsupported assertions everywhere. V is for Veracity sadly lacking. W is for Whopper with smirking satisfaction. X is for Xanex or whatever the author was on. Y is for Young Earth Creationism a notorious yarn. Finally Z is for Zilch, the value of this book. Don't waste your time, don't give it a look.
"D is for Dinosaur" is little more than creationist propaganda and histrionics aimed at children. The cynicism of this ploy is standard operating procedure for author Ken Ham. All of his published works (for children or adults) singularly fail to distinguish fact from fancy.
Do your children a favor - instead of "D is for Dinosaur" try Extreme Dinosaurs by Luis Rey or Dinosaurs!: The Biggest Baddest Strangest Fastest by Howard Zimmerman.
If you must serve up some half-baked ham how about the Dr. Suess classic Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books). | | | | The curse of the Hams Nov 27, 2005 |
It would be easy to dismiss a book that teaches that dinosaurs and human beings were contemporaries. However, as the last laugh may be with the millions who find themselves in sympathy with that view, it would be wise to give this book closer study.
"D is for Dinosaur" is the desperate cry of a person of faith attempting to reconcile the unharmonious realities of a literalist interpretation of the Bible and an earth full of the fossils.
As a person of faith myself, as well as one who believes in the findings of science, I can only shake my head at some of the assertions put forth in the book. A sampling: - All animals were vegetarians in the garden of Eden - even dinosaurs clearly built for predation - Noah was able to take small and very young dinosaurs with him on the Ark - Fossils are the result of animals (including dinosaurs) killed in the Noahic flood - Tales of dragons are based on actual encounters between humans and dinosaurs - The earth is only about 6,000 years old
Like many good religious education books, this one is colorful and fun, and even has a section for parents and teachers. It was here that I came across some of the absurdities that undergird the book. On page 70, students are taught to challenge their biology teachers. If the teacher says that such and such an animal lived 25 million years ago, the child is supposed to respond with "Were you there?" This is supposed to reduce the teacher to blithering, as shown in the illustration of flop-sweating instructor. However, that the question could also be turned back on the author. "You say that dinosaurs lived in the Garden Eden. Were you there?"
The problem here is really one of epistemology - how we know what we know. If Ham's approach won out, we would be reduced to accepting only events that we had personally witnessed. We could not believe that our parents had been children, or that the Civil War had actually occured. We would not be able to believe that places we had not visited existed. The entire basis of science, technology and communication would fall apart. Perhaps this book has value for this reason alone: to help us understand the basis for our own beliefs, and thereby guide us to strengthen our arguments. That knowledge will come in handy on the day the literalists come to our towns to push their semi-logical views.
I admire Ham, after a fashion, for having the courage to put his beliefs into words and pictures and expose them to public scrutiny. I don't accept his thesis, of course, or his assumptions about knowledge. Believers must find ways to harmonize the two great sources of truth in contemporary life: Scriptures and Science. This book should be a warning to all who love the Bible and science, and a primer for combating those who feel they must subvert one on behalf of the other. | | | | I.D. is for Intelligent Design Nov 13, 2005 |
Do you want to teach your child to think critically, or to swallow everything he/she hears without question? Unfortunately, many are ruled by passion rather than logic, and are therefore unwilling to consider the possibility of a view not held by the establishment. This book introduces young children to the idea that this world and its inhabitants came into being by the work of an Intelligent Designer, rather than by a Big Bang.
Folks argue on both sides using the same scientific evidence to back up their claims. Their presuppositions affect their interpretation of the data. However, a visit to www.discovery.org will provide a list of scientists as well as an intelligent basis of their conclusions. Or, you may want to read Science and Evidence of Design in the Universe by Dr. Stephen Mayer or Darwin's Black Box by Michael Behe.
For those who want to introduce their children to the idea of an Intelligent Designer, D is for Dinosaur is an excellent resource. It's fun rhyme allows it to be sung to the tune of the ABC song. The illustrations are bright, humorous and attention grabbing. Plus, they are reproduced in the back for you to copy so your children can put in their own colors. Additionally, the author provides other resources helpful for parents and educators.
