Louise Gouge delves deep into the post-war affects of the Civil war and treats the three sides of this conflict with great balance. She has taken the Northern viewpoint and expressed gently the needs of men to be free, as well a sympathetic look at the destruction and pride of the South. Then with an equal ability, Gouge stresses the post-war affects on the new found freedoms and issues of those slaves who've known nothing else but captivity.
This romance novel takes twists and turns that press the reader into hyper-drive, forcing them "read faster" until the book is done. In her novel filled with conflict, Gouge has done a beautiful job in this intense and historically accurate battle between the North and the South. Emerald Pointe has found a successful novel in this first of a series by Louise M. Gouge. Holding true to her form she brings to life the turmoil of a sensitive and volatile time, showing the reader that God is always in control.
In this "can't put it down until it's done" book, you'll be sure to have a greater appreciation for love in a war-torn era. Does Juliana and Andre's love survive? You'll have to turn the pages for the answers.

I'm impressed with this book. I'll tell you why. I remember growing up in the 1970s and watching several "mini-series" at that time. One was The Holocaust, and the other two were Roots and North & South. Remember those? I also read the books Roots and Queen by Alex Haley at the time. They were fabulous.
Then Came Faith brought all of those memories back and with them came the emotion that coexists with reflecting on such trying times. I loved Juliana and Andre. They made an interesting couple--especially because of their extremely conflicting beliefs--even though they were apart for the majority of the book. The author did a fabulous job showing the hearts of both abolitionists and confederates at the time of reconstruction in the deep south.
This story had some grit, yes, but it wasn't overly done. I especially loved it when Juliana went to confront the slimebag Dupris in his bawdy house and tried to help Gemma escape. That was priceless. Of course, the Civil War era books aren't realistic without a few Klan scenes. Those guys in the white hoods just make me sick, but without them the story doesn't feel as authentic. There was just enough to give you a sense of the internal and external conflict the characters experienced, but not enough to seem excessively dramatic.
I thoroughly enjoyed Then Came Faith and am looking forward to the next book in the series. This is one of those stories that you hate to have end. The faith element was very well done and the change of heart amongst many of the characters was heartwarming and sincere. I also must add that I really enjoyed getting to know Andre and experiencing the doubts regarding his culture and the way he grew up believing that "chattels" as he referred to them, were not equal to whites, yet he loved Cordell like a brother, so he saw the contradiction even within himself. | | | | A Real Page Turner Feb 23, 2007 |
| This was the first Louise Gouge title I have read but I can assure you it won't be the last. A post-Civil War New Orleans comes to life in this historical novel dealing with a wonderful cast of characters coming to grips with their differing political viewpoints. A very personal look at the integrating of former slaves into the workplace helps bring this story to life. The relationship between Juliana (a northerner) and Andre' (a former Confederate naval officer) is quite a page turner. This is the first novel I have read by Louise M. Gouge, author of the award winning Ahab's Legacy series.
Then Came Faith is an American civil war era tale about the usual protagonists, Juliana, the Northern abolitionist and Andre, the Southern slave owner. The difference with this novel is that it is set after the conclusion of the war and describes the issues and points of view of both characters with great clarity.
Juliana has moved to New Orleans with one goal - start a school for the children of former slaves and be a part of the South's recovery. Andre harbours great bitterness in his heart due to the shattering losses his family experienced at the hands of the Northern Army and the murder of his father by his best friend, a Southerner but Northern sympathiser.
Andre and Juliana's attraction is immediate yet upon hearing her Boston accent, Andre's instilled manners desert him and he vows never to speak to her again. Circumstances arise which bring Andre and Juliana into regular contact and despite the heated disapproval of their fledgling friendship by her confidant, Amelia, and Juliana's own reservations their romance blossoms. That is, until the realities of their moral and cultural differences interfere. Threats are made, people are murdered and deceit abounds which drives a wedge between the two that may be insurmountable.
Louise M. Gouge writes a fascinating tale of this period of reconstruction in the South and brings it alive in the reader's mind. Her characters are well developed and the secondary characters contribute much to the flavour of the book. The romance developed a little too quickly and initially felt somewhat contrived but this passed and I ended the book feeling the author gave a clear picture of the social tragedy of slavery while not over-demonising the position of the Southerners. The thread of mystery surrounding Andre's father's death wove in well with the romance and added substance and appeal to the story. This is the first in a series and I would recommend it especially to lovers of historical novels.

"Then Came Faith" is the latest work by master writer of historical romance, Louise M. Gouge. Beautifully published by Emerald Pointe Books, it nobly builds on the characters and story lines from her award-winning "Ahab's Legacy" trilogy and extends their sweep to Reconstruction-era New Orleans, where Andre Beauchamp - an Annapolis man, Confederate Navy blockade runner, and former slaveowner - returns home in 1865 to a world turned upside down. The Union Army, which had hanged his father as a spy, patrols the streets, his mother is deranged, the family business is in ruins, carpetbaggers control the levers of commerce, and emancipation has created - on paper at least - a new social order. Into this maelstrom steps the young and beautiful Juliana Harris, a New England abolitionist and underground railroad operative of strict Christian upbringing, who comes to New Orleans to build a school for the newly emancipated Negro children and women. Andre and Juliana meet and their attraction is immediate and visceral, but surely this romance cannot be fulfilled. Andre is bent on avenging his father's death and despises all that the North - and northerners - have done to his beloved South. Juliana sees slavery as an unmitigated evil that has irreparably tainted all who condoned its barbarities, especially slaveowners. How could God have let this happen, she asks - and so does Andre. Thus, the story line derives its energy from the tension between the centrifugal forces of hate and revenge and the centripetal forces of forgiveness and love.
Louise Gouge's characters are richly drawn and in learning of their lives we glimpse both the noble and the nefarious in southern culture. Former slaves Cordell, Gemma, and the beloved Aunt Sukey - still servants to the Beauchamp family, but much more than that as Andre will discover. Andre's imperious and mysterious grandfather, Augustus Beauchamp, the sleazy carpetbagger, Pierre Dupris, the menacing Bernard - each will have to be overcome as Andre struggles to restore his mother's health, his family's wealth, his personal honor, and to cleanse his soul. Juliana is hosted by the Randolph family, southern Unionists who risk everything to support her; is courted by Dr. Mayfield, a Union physician; and is driven by Jim Jim and inspired by Reverend Adams - both former Beauchamp family slaves. Brothel madam Althea Dawson adds bawdy spice to the mix.
If you want a page-turner, "Then Came Faith" will singe your fingers as Louise Gouge's narrative starts fast and accelerates, with surprising characters and twists of plot coming from every direction. Andre discovers his family's deepest hidden secrets and is accused of attempted murder. Juliana faces violence and death as she builds her school and ultimately finds herself abducted in a brothel, only to be rescued by Andre, and then proposed to by Dr. Mayfield. Andre witnesses her acceptance of Mayfield's proposal - or so he thinks - and...well, you have to read the book.
As with all of Louise Gouge's novels, "Then Came Faith" harkens back to a time when people's lives were animated by faith and belief. Modern Americans would do well to contemplate the awesome moral fiber of our forebears who at the loss of over 600,000 lives sustained the Civil War to final victory in order to give our nation a new birth of freedom. At the outset of that conflict, Abraham Lincoln, in the poetry of his First Inaugural Address, beseeched his countrymen to overcome the hate and rancor spawned by the slavery issue and be inspired instead "by the better angels of our nature." That is the story of Andre and Juliana in "Then Came Faith." This is a superb work by a gifted writer and we look forward to Louise Gouge's next book with relish.
