La lectura no le será solamente beneficiosa para la relación que mantiene con su cónyuge sino también afectará positivamente sus lazos interfamiliares o con los amigos. Chapman da muchos ejemplos prácticos y de la vida real, de modo que cada lector podrá identificarse con alguno de los tipos de comunicación afectiva descritos. Gary Chapman en su libro Los cinco lenguajes del amor, observa que hay cinco maneras generales de expresar amor.
a) Palabras de afirmación (como el reconocer logros, elogiar y dar ánimo).
b) Tiempo de calidad (como el escuchar con atención, realizar paseos y viajes juntos).
c) Recibir regalos (como las flores, las joyas y los libros).
d) Actos de servicio (como lavar el automóvil, cortar el césped, hacer la comida, cuidarle en la enfermedad).
e) Toque fÃsico (como tomar la mano, dar abrazos, besos).
Es de suma importancia que cada cónyuge descubra cuál de estos "lenguajes" aprecia más su cónyuge. Es grato y aun necesario "hablar" todos estos lenguajes emocionales para expresar amor a su cónyuge, pero conviene un énfasis especial en aquel que el o ella siente hondamente. Es posible que uno esté amando con un lenguaje que el otro apenas siente o entiende como amor. Si a cierta esposa lo que más le hace sentirse amada son las palabras de afirmación, no le será tan importante que todos los dÃas su esposo le regale algo material, sin elogiarle o animarla verbalmente.
