Publishers Description

Science has never been so much fun! The Boy Scientist offers all the vintage appeal of Popular Mechanics's popular Boy Mechanic series combined with daring adventures in the laboratory.

Taken from the turn-of-the-twentieth-century issues of Popular Mechanics magazine, these 160 experiments—based on chemistry, math, and physics—carry on the Popular Mechanics's tradition of making science engaging and entertaining. And even though technology has changed, and our knowledge of how things work has grown, the underlying scientific principles behind these activities remain sound.

The projects include constructing a homemade mariner's compass; microscope without a lens; telescopic rangefinder; figuring out the height of a tall tree with the help of the sun; magnetizing watches and metal tools; crystallizing minerals in the lab; and building a simple radio transmitting set. Plus, there are thought-provoking experiments with gravity, pressure, and vacuums, and information on carrying out all these activities safely. As always in the series, charming illustrations throughout add to the nostalgic appeal.

This classic collection is the perfect gift for every budding young mad scientist!

retro-technology  Nov 4, 2009
If you grew up with the books of Alfred P. Morgan you will love this book. If you like dabbling in retro-technology you will love this book. If you appreciate a well crafted book at a modest price you will also love this book.
This book is a collection of articles culled from issues of Popular Mechanics published in the early nineteen-hundreds. This accounts for the somewhat incongruous pictures of boys in dress shirts and neckties working on a lathe ... or else wistfully looking out a large window at the neighboring farm, some two miles off. They are wondering how to lessen their isolation by improving communications with their neighbor. Have no fear: being technology-savvy they will soon find a solution. By reading this book you too can acquire these skills.
Alfred Morgan was an engineer and writer of children's books of the "how to" kind. His books have titles such as, "Things a Boy Can Do with Electricity." Of course now-a-days such titles are politically incorrect, so it was gutsy for the editors to use "Boy Scientist." There are other strong similarities with Morgan's books. In fact, some of the articles in "Boy Scientist" predate Morgan, and may have actually been inspirations, or even sources.
But in certain aspect this book is not quite as good as Morgan's. Yes, the pictures are great ... maybe better than Morgan's ... but some of the articles are too brief and hard to follow. Then there are also science mistakes (yes, afraid so!). On page 31 it tells how to make a barometer ... but the instructions given are for a very different kind of barometer than the one illustrated. Page 62 shows a fascinating gadget ... but there is no clue what it does. On page 68 it tells how to make a charge detector, and goes on to say, "... if it holds a slight electric charge, the pieces of foil will draw together." No, no, no! Like charges repel! Page 108 tells you how to make a motor ... then warns you not to do it, because it uses dangerous mercury. Well, maybe so. But on page 27 is described an experiment using white phosphorus. Well in my book, white phosphorus is at least as dangerous as mercury.
But all in all, this is a great book at a modest price ... but be careful with the white phosphorus!
