For the most part, I had missed out on this modern classic on holiness. During its 25th anniversary year, my pastor bought a copy for every member of our church. I joyfully devoured the book.
The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges is an excellent book on the theology of holiness (i.e. sanctification). "Be holy as I am holy," God says to the Israelites in the wilderness, and Peter aptly quotes this and applies it years later to the New Testament life of a Christian.
The concept of holiness may be one of the most essential Christian doctrines and practices that we are, for the most part, entirely missing in the modern church. Bridges calls us to account on this through simple exegesis of the Scriptures.
At first, the topic can be a bit overwhelming -- holiness, really? It almost rings outdated to our contemporary ears, and we may be inclined to immediately dismiss it. Before reading Bridges' book, I wondered, "Am I going to feel worse or better when I'm done reading this?" Thankfully, Bridges is not only uncompromising in his presentation of scriptural truth, he is also gentle and gracious in his approach. He pokes fun at the misconception that the word "holiness" seems to engender nowadays -- visions of black stockings, bunned hair, and horse-drawn carriages.
While God does not require people to be perfect, he does invite (and expect) his followers to join him in a journey of becoming more holy as we draw more closely to his presence in relationship. "No one can attain any degree of holiness without God working in his life," Bridges writes, "but just as surely no one will attain it without effort on his own part."
Pursuing holiness is not a legalistic venture, according to Bridges, but it does require work. He explains, "We have misunderstood 'living by faith' to mean that no effort at holiness is required on our part." He maintains that being holy as God is holy is more than ascribing to a list of prohibitions, but rather believing in the God of the Bible and conforming to the moral character of God. Essentially, The Pursuit of Holiness isn't so much about doing things for God, as it is about doing things with God. As we yield to the Lord's will in our lives, we are left transformed and looking more like him, as Moses' face radiated when he left the presence of God.
The author, however, does raise the bar of expectation for many modern Christians. He attacks our spiritual malaise and challenges us to press deep into the life God has for us -- to even pursue it. According to Bridges, to be merely a "sinner saved by grace" is simply not good enough and unbiblical. As God's children, Christians are called to walk in the life that Jesus modeled through the power of the Holy Spirit. Bridges says that we have actually succumbed to certain sins, because we mistakenly believe that they are not "that serious." All sin is the same, and true holiness is being "morally blameless."
While the pursuit is just as blessed as the end product, the call for a Christian to pursue personal piety is universal and inexcusable. Thanks to Bridges' book, we have a great resource to help us walk that out.

I read this book over 20 years ago and it had a profound affect on my spiritual walk at that time. It was brought back to my attention recently and so I reread it. Again it reaffirmed what a clasic this is.

| There is a movement about where the Holy Spirit is moving in the hearts of believers in Jesus, drawing them to experience knowing God in a deeper way. In "Pursuit of Holiness" the author, Jerry Bridges, explains through the use of the Bible, the reason and process you'll experience as you begin this life long journey of the Pursuit of Holiness. Bridges clearly explains the damage that indwelling sin creates for the follower of Christ. Furthermore he makes it clear that holiness is not a series of do's and don'ts, but a conformity to the charactor of God and the obedience to the will of God. All this made possible through the indwelling presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the believer. This book was recommended to me by a dear friend...I bought it right away, but just finally got to it - why did I wait? This book is written in a way that makes it a very easy read - but even more important...very easy to apply to day-to-day living.
This book was so "on the money" for me, that I bet I journaled about twenty-five scriptures that were referenced.
